Britten Centenary Weekend: Noye’s Fludde

Young people from Lowestoft schools and choirs

Generations of schoolchildren the world over know it – and in his 2012 film Moonrise Kingdom director Wes Anderson reaffirmed it – Britten’s opera is simply spellbinding theatre, an unforgettable experience for performers and audience alike, and some of the finest of all music written for young people. And not just young people – Britten’s dream of a community of musicians and a composer in his community is realised to perfection in an opera where professional singers and instrumentalists perform side by side with their young colleagues. Even the audience, in thunderous renditions of famous hymn tunes, actively participate in the biblical drama of Noah and his ark. Touching, vivid, celebratory, occasionally comic and ultimately profoundly moving, Noye’s Fludde, performed in the composer’s birthplace, takes its rightful place as one of the centrepieces of the centenary celebrations.

Aldeburgh Music would like to thank Suffolk County Music Service (Philip Shaw – Head of Service) and Suffolk Music Education Hub for their support and work on this production in the schools and community of Lowestoft.
