Britten Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge; Serenade for tenor, horn and strings
Arvo Pärt Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten

Landmarks in the composer’s output and some of the richest of any music in the string repertoire – a Serenade, variations ancient and modern, tributes to a teacher, to a musical hero and a memorial from composer who never met Britten. The centrepiece is the first flowering of a remarkable musical partnership – some of the first – and greatest – music Britten wrote for his almost life-long muse and partner, the iconic Serenade sung here by the brilliant young British tenor Allan Clayton. Purcell and Pärt work their magic by varying the simplest of source material, and in his own variations, Britten crafts what many consider his first recognisable masterpiece – a dazzling, witty, affectionate homage to his teacher and mentor, Frank Bridge. Fittingly, it is the flagship string ensemble 33 of the Britten–Pears Young Artist Programme’s that brings us to the end of a year of celebration.
