Map of Britten
The Old Mill
In 1937 Britten bought and converted a disused mill, granary and miller’s cottage just off the main road in Snape for £450. With a hiatus from 1939 to 1942, spent in America, he lived at the Old Mill until 1947 and composed the opera Peter Grimes there. The Old Mill’s balcony overlooked the old Snape Maltings, a view which must have inspired Britten’s choice of a permanent home for Aldeburgh Festival three decades later. Today the old mill itself is not open to the public, but the two adjacent buildings are now a guesthouse.
