Aldeburgh

Scallop

Suffolk artist Maggi Hambling’s tribute to Britten, Scallop, sits on Aldeburgh beach just north of the Moot Hall. Aldeburgh’s seascape and shingle beach was one of Britten’s greatest source of inspiration, as is clear from the interludes in Britten’s Peter Grimes. The imposing steel structure of two interlocking scallop shells stands four metres high and is pierced with words sung by Grimes towards the end of the opera: ‘I hear those voices that will not be drowned’.
