Alde River walk

River Alde. Photo: Angela Moore

While living at the Old Mill, Britten would walk along the Alde River as part of his daily routine while planning the direction of his compositions. The Alde has one of the most beautiful estuaries on the east coast of England and is a haven for wildlife. The landscape and soundscape are written into the fibre of Britten’s music – Curlew River no doubt named after the curlews on the Alde. Today you can take several walks along the river – the Sailor’s Path to Aldeburgh and a walk around Snape Warren along the north bank, and a walk to Iken along the south bank. You can also take a river trip from Snape Maltings quay.
